Various real-case data collections (previously described in this post) have now been ingested into the Essex Research Data Repository, with metadata records created. You can see an example of one of the data collections in the screenshots below. These are now being shown to the researchers that provided the sample data, to get their views and feedback. So far this has proven invaluable, providing insight and feedback that would be hard find elsewhere and will further shape our final product.
We've also uploaded some existing data collections from the ESDS collections and UKDA-store (another self-archiving facility) for testing purposes. In the next stage of testing external specialists and Essex researchers will be given user accounts and invited to test the repository themselves.

Recently we've been having to grapple with various legal challenges that accompany repository development, namely the depositor agreement and licencing options for research data. With some great feedback from the JISC MRD community, particularly UWE's pilot project, we're drafting a depositor agreement based primarily on that developed for UKDA-store, with some amendments based on Edinburgh's DataShare repository T&C’s. In terms of licencing, we've found the DCC's resource on this subject to be a great help. We will be using these suggestions as the basis for our selection of licences.
The University of Essex Research Data Management Policy and Implementation Route Map have been developed and were approved by the university’s Research Strategy Committee on 26 June 2012. The policy, which consists of 11 principles, sets out how research data is managed throughout the data lifecycle to ensure transparency and appropriate access, supporting the UK Research Council’s requirements and Freedom of Information legislation. A route map identifies and maps the steps needed to be taken in order to achieve full compliance with the requirements of the EPSRC. This route map considers: data management support, data storage, data register, progress reporting, implementation resources and compliance review.
Data Management Planning guidance has been written by the RD@Essex team for the Essex REO website, which will be published shortly. This guidance provides a brief overview of relevant topics, then pointing to the well-established UK Data Archive Create & Manage Data website.
REO is interested in further developing the Archive’s Data Management Costing Tool that was developed during the JISC-funded DMP-ESRC project and to incorporate it on the REO’s grants information web pages. Essex REO also organize regular Grant Writing training workshops, as part of the university’s Learning and Development programme, where training on data management planning and costing data management will now be included in Spring 2013.
Training events have been planned by RD@Essex, as part of the University of Essex Learning and Development programme for staff for year 2012-2013:
- Sharing your Research Data – Ethical & Legal Issues – 24 January 2013
- Looking after your Research Data – 5 December 2012 & 19 February 2013
- Grant writing workshop, incl. resourcing and costing data management – Spring 2013
